Summary

New World: Aeternum is an action MMORPG set on the island of Aeternum. Players fight to survive in a supernatural world where they cannot die.

Contributions

  • Created an intro quest chain for The Covenant and made dozens of NPCs to populate the new faction enclaves.
  • Designed and implemented quests, items, and encounters for Rise of The Angry Earth DLC. Worked closely with Product Owners to ensure deliverable quality.
  • Designed and implemented repeatable solo and PvP quests for Cutlass Keys' revamp.

Process

I worked on the LBI quest team acting as support for Amazon Game Studios. Starting on a project already shipped with a proprietary engine is akin to getting thrown in the deep end of a pool. After an initial struggle we found our footing and strived to push the quest system in new directions. Using quest tasks and containers we found ways to create logic not documented. Our Cutlass Keys quests were especially novel, one of mine uses hidden loot pools and achievements to randomly assign an objective to the player.

Working for a client on a completed project was challenging at times, but restrictions breed creativity. Designing quests around existing material or limitations was often easier than designing them completely from scratch. For example, every enemy in my quests was built out of models and attributes already present in game. This resulted in many excellent combinations such as explosive security panthers, and an electrified Frankenstein's monster.
